Why Britons Visit Egypt

Why Egypt is back as a UK winter sun mainstay

Egypt is one of the top 10 long-haul destinations for British holidaymakers, with the Red Sea booming and Cairo back on the cultural circuit. Three reasons are doing the heavy lifting.

Red Sea package holidays

  • TUI, easyJet Holidays, Jet2 weekly charters
  • From Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow
  • All-inclusive packages from £400

Five-hour direct from London

  • British Airways flies Heathrow to Cairo daily
  • EgyptAir same route
  • Two-hour time difference, no jet lag

The Grand Egyptian Museum

  • Opened November 2025
  • Tutankhamun's full 5,000-piece collection
  • Brits adding Cairo extensions to Red Sea trips

What you'll need

Three documents. That's the whole list.

Egypt's eVisa is one of the simplest on the planet for British travellers. You don't need an invitation letter, bank statements, or an in-person interview.

  • A UK passport valid 6 monthsYour passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your planned arrival date in Egypt, with one blank visa page.

  • A digital photo (we'll validate it)Any clear smartphone photo of yourself against a plain background. We crop and resize to Egypt's 4 x 6 cm requirement at no extra cost.

  • A hotel bookingIf you don't have one yet, we can add a hotel booking for $5.

Photo gotcha

The 35 x 45 mm UK photo doesn't fit Egypt's spec

Egypt requires 4 x 6 cm (40 x 60 mm) photos, a larger size and different aspect ratio than the 35 x 45 mm UK biometric passport standard. The government portal rejects photos that don't match exactly. This is the single most common reason British applications get bounced. Our team reformats your photo to Egyptian specs before submission, so you don't need a second trip to the Post Office photo booth.

Before you fly

Things every British traveller should know about Egypt

Practical, UK-specific notes from the 15,000+ travellers we've helped reach Egypt since 2021.

FCDO: safe for tourism

The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) considers Cairo, Luxor, Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada, El Gouna, Marsa Alam, and the Nile cruise corridor safe for British travellers. The FCDO advises against all but essential travel to North Sinai interior and parts of the Libyan border. Your travel insurance is only valid in FCDO-cleared zones.

Bring USD or EUR cash

British Pound is not accepted in Egypt. Bring USD or EUR cash for tipping (baksheesh), small purchases, and taxis. UK Visa, Mastercard, and Amex from Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, NatWest, Monzo, Starling, and Revolut all work at major hotels, restaurants, and ATMs.

Type C/F plug, 220V outlets

Egypt uses European two-round-pin sockets at 220V. UK three-pin plugs do not fit. Most modern UK devices handle 220V, but hair dryers, kettles, and CPAPs may need a voltage converter, not just a plug adapter. Pick up a Type C adapter at Boots or the airport.

Drink bottled water only

Tap water is not safe to drink in Egypt, even when brushing teeth. Stick to sealed bottled water and skip ice in roadside drinks. Hotels and Nile cruises filter their water, but bottled stays the safer call.

FAQ

Questions Britons actually ask

Answers to the questions our British customers send us most often, including the awkward ones.

Yes. Every British passport holder needs a visa to enter Egypt, with one narrow exception below for direct flights to South Sinai. The Egypt eVisa is the online option for tourism and short business trips. You apply before you fly and receive the approved visa by email.

Yes. British Airways and EgyptAir fly London Heathrow to Cairo. TUI Airways, easyJet, and Jet2 operate direct charters from London Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, and other UK airports to Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, and Marsa Alam. London to Cairo is about 5 hours direct.

No. Egypt requires a 4 x 6 cm (40 x 60 mm) photo, a larger size and different aspect ratio than the 35 x 45 mm UK biometric passport standard. The government portal rejects photos that don't match exactly. This is the single most common reason British applications get bounced. Our team reformats your photo to Egyptian specs before submission so you don't need a second trip to the Post Office photo booth.

Our $54.99 USD single-entry Standard fee (around £80 at current rates) covers the government visa, a hand review of your application by an experienced visa specialist, photo reformatting to Egyptian specs, error checking, English-language support by email and WhatsApp, and a refund if we make the error. The official portal at https://visa2egypt.gov.eg is real and lower-cost. If you have time and a perfect photo, you can absolutely apply there.

The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) considers Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada, El Gouna, Marsa Alam, and the Nile cruise corridor safe for British travellers. The FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the North Sinai interior and parts of the Libyan border. Check gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/egypt before you fly. Your travel insurance is typically only valid for FCDO-cleared destinations.

The free Sinai-only entry stamp applies to passengers arriving directly at Sharm El Sheikh, Taba, or Saint Catherine airports, provided they stay no more than 15 days within South Sinai. Direct flights to Hurghada and Marsa Alam (most UK charter capacity) require the full eVisa. If you plan to visit Cairo, Luxor, or anywhere outside South Sinai, you need the full eVisa.

No. UK package operators (TUI, easyJet Holidays, Jet2 Holidays, On the Beach, BA Holidays) do not include the Egypt eVisa in their packages. ATOL protects your flight and accommodation, not your visa. You need to arrange the eVisa separately, either through the official Egyptian portal or a service like ours, before you fly.

Yes. UK Visa, Mastercard, and American Express cards from Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, NatWest, Santander UK, Halifax, Monzo, Starling, Revolut, and other British banks work normally through our secure international checkout. The same cards also work at most Egyptian hotels, restaurants, and ATMs. GBP cash is not accepted in Egypt, so bring USD or EUR for tipping (baksheesh).

Standard processing is 8 business days. Priority is 5 business days. Express is 3 business days. Most UK applications complete within their package window. We email you the moment the Egyptian authorities issue the visa.

Yes. Egyptian immigration stamps your passport on entry and exit. The eVisa itself is an electronic record tied to your passport number, but you'll still get the physical stamp.
