What you'll need
Three documents. That's the whole list.
Egypt's eVisa is one of the simplest on the planet for German travelers. You don't need an invitation letter, bank statements, or an in-person interview.
- A German passport valid 6 monthsYour passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your planned arrival date in Egypt, with one blank visa page.
- A digital photo (we'll validate it)Any clear smartphone photo of yourself against a plain background. We crop and resize to Egypt's 4x6 cm requirement at no extra cost.
- A hotel bookingIf you don't have one yet, we can add a hotel booking for $5.
Photo gotcha
The 35 x 45 mm German photo doesn't fit Egypt's spec
Egypt requires 4 x 6 cm (40 x 60 mm) photos, a larger size and different aspect ratio than the standard 35 x 45 mm German biometric passport standard. The government portal rejects photos that do not match exactly. This is the single most common reason German applications get bounced. Our team reformats your photo to Egyptian specs before submission, so you don't need to visit a Fotoautomat again.
Before you fly
Things every German traveler should know about Egypt
Practical, Germany-specific notes from the 15,000+ travellers we've helped reach Egypt since 2021.
Auswärtiges Amt: safe for tourism
The German Federal Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt) considers Cairo, Luxor, Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada, El Gouna, Marsa Alam, and the Nile cruise corridor safe for German tourists. Restrictions apply only to North Sinai interior and the Libyan border. German Embassy in Cairo provides 24-hour consular support.
Direct flights from 8+ German airports
Germany has more direct flights to Egypt than any other European country. Lufthansa, Condor, Eurowings, TUI fly, SunExpress, and Discover Airlines all operate from Frankfurt, Munich, Dusseldorf, Cologne, Hamburg, and Berlin. Frankfurt to Cairo is 4 hours direct.
Credit cards yes, Girocard no
German Visa and Mastercard credit cards from Sparkasse, Volksbank, Deutsche Bank, ING, and Commerzbank work normally at Egyptian hotels, restaurants, and ATMs. The Girocard (EC card) does not work internationally. EUR cash is accepted for tipping (baksheesh) at major tourist resorts; USD also widely accepted.
Drink bottled water only
Tap water is not safe to drink in Egypt, even when brushing teeth. Stick to sealed bottled water and skip ice in roadside drinks. Hotels and Nile cruises filter their water, but bottled stays the safer call.
FAQ
Questions Germans actually ask
Answers to the questions our German customers send us most often, including the awkward ones.
Yes. Every German passport holder needs a visa to enter Egypt, with one narrow exception below for direct flights to South Sinai. The Egypt eVisa is the online option for tourism and short business trips. You apply before you fly and receive the approved visa by email.
Yes. Germany has more direct flights to Egypt than any other European country. Lufthansa operates Frankfurt-Cairo and Munich-Cairo. EgyptAir flies Frankfurt-Cairo and Berlin-Cairo. Condor, Eurowings, TUI fly, SunExpress, and Discover Airlines run direct routes to Hurghada, Marsa Alam, and Sharm El Sheikh from Frankfurt, Munich, Dusseldorf, Cologne, Hamburg, and Berlin. Frankfurt to Cairo is 4 hours direct.

Our $54.99 USD single-entry Standard fee covers the government visa, a hand review of your application by an experienced visa specialist, photo reformatting to Egyptian specs, error checking, English-language support by email and WhatsApp, and a refund if we make the error. The official portal at https://visa2egypt.gov.eg is real and lower-cost. Many German travelers choose egvisas.com to avoid the English-only paperwork and the photo size mismatch that catches most German applicants.
The German Federal Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt) considers Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada, El Gouna, Marsa Alam, and the Nile cruise corridor safe for German tourists. The Foreign Office advises against travel to the North Sinai interior and the Libyan border. The German Embassy in Cairo and Consulate General in Alexandria provide consular support.
The free Sinai-only entry stamp applies to passengers arriving directly at Sharm El Sheikh, Taba, or Saint Catherine airports, provided they stay no more than 15 days within South Sinai. Direct flights to Hurghada and Marsa Alam (much more common from Germany) require the full eVisa. If you plan to visit Cairo, Luxor, or anywhere outside South Sinai, you need the full eVisa.
Yes. The free Sinai-only entry stamp applies only to South Sinai airports (Sharm El Sheikh, Taba, Saint Catherine). Hurghada and Marsa Alam require a regular Egypt visa for all German passport holders. Most German Red Sea travelers arrive on a regular tourist eVisa.
Yes, with one caveat. German Visa and Mastercard credit cards from Sparkasse, Volksbank, Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, ING, and other German banks work normally through our secure international checkout, and at most Egyptian hotels, restaurants, and ATMs. The German Girocard (EC card) does not work internationally, so do not rely on it abroad.
Standard processing is 8 business days. Priority is 5 business days. Express is 3 business days. Most German applications complete within their package window. We email you the moment the Egyptian authorities issue the visa.
Yes. Egyptian immigration stamps your passport on entry and exit. The eVisa itself is an electronic record tied to your passport number, but you'll still get the physical stamp. As a German passport holder, the Egypt stamp does not affect your Schengen or visa-free travel rights.
