The short answer: if you are on the 76-country list and visiting for tourism or short business, the eVisa is faster, cheaper once you account for the embassy trip, and you never give up your passport. The sticker visa is the right choice when you fall outside that list, or when your travel purpose needs a category the eVisa does not cover.

Documents required

What you submit, in each route

Both routes ask for proof of who you are, where you are staying, and that you will leave. The eVisa accepts digital copies; the embassy wants originals plus supporting letters.

Digital

Egypt eVisa documents

  • Passport bio page, scan or clear phone photo. Valid 6 months beyond arrival.
  • Recent digital photo, 4 x 6 cm, plain background. We reformat automatically.
  • Hotel booking or accommodation address. $5 add-on available if not booked yet.
  • Email address where the approved eVisa will be delivered.
  • Card or digital wallet for payment. Government fee bundled in.
Originals

Regular visa documents

  • Original passport, valid 6+ months, at least one blank visa page.
  • Two recent passport photos, printed, against a plain white background.
  • Completed application form, signed in person at the embassy.
  • Invitation letter from an Egyptian sponsor, or detailed itinerary plus confirmed hotel.
  • Financial proof, recent bank statements or pay slips covering 3 to 6 months.
  • Return ticket or onward travel itinerary.
  • Employer or student letter stating purpose and dates of travel.
  • Visa fee, paid in cash or by money order depending on the embassy.

Decision guide

When to choose each route

A practical rule of thumb. If you tick any line in the eVisa column, start there. If you tick any line in the regular-visa column, the embassy is the only path.

Pick the eVisa if

  • Your passport is from one of the 76 eligible countries
  • You are visiting for tourism, business, or family under 30 days
  • You want everything done online from home
  • You need a visa in under 10 days
  • You want to keep your passport while waiting
  • You are happy with a printed eVisa instead of a sticker

Use the regular visa if

  • Your passport is not on the 76-country list
  • You plan to stay longer than 30 days per entry
  • You are traveling for work, study, or residency
  • You need a diplomatic, official, or service category
  • You want a physical sticker in your passport
  • You are applying as a journalist on assignment, which has separate clearance rules

Quick answers

eVisa vs Regular Visa FAQs

The questions travelers ask most when deciding between the two routes. See the full FAQ for everything else.

For immigration purposes at Cairo or Hurghada, yes. The eVisa grants the same entry rights as a single or multiple entry tourist sticker visa: 30 days of stay, plus the entry stamp on arrival. The difference is in how you got it and what you carry into the country. The eVisa is a printed PDF tied to your passport number; the regular visa is a physical sticker. Both are checked the same way at the border.

Yes, but most travelers do not. The embassy route costs your time and travel even when the visa fee is lower, and processing takes 2 to 4 weeks compared with 3 to 8 business days. People with eVisa eligibility choose the embassy only when they need a long-stay category (work, study, residency) that the eVisa does not cover.

You apply for a regular visa at the nearest Egyptian embassy or consulate. The 76-country eVisa list is fixed by Egyptian regulation, and there is no third-party path around it. Bring the standard documents (passport, photos, invitation or itinerary, financial proof, return ticket) plus any category-specific letters.

The headline fee is lower for the regular visa ($25 to $80 sticker fee versus $99 to $199 for the eVisa with egvisas). Once you add the cost of travel to the embassy, time off work for the appointment, courier or pickup return, and the 2 to 4 week wait, the eVisa is almost always cheaper in total cost. We bundle the government fee, document review, photo validation, and 24/7 support into the price.

Not in the same trip. The eVisa is granted for the entry types and stay length declared at application. If you need a different category or longer stay, you apply for the regular visa from your home country before traveling, or you apply for an extension inside Egypt at the Ministry of Interior offices in Cairo, Alexandria, or other major cities.

Yes. The eVisa is electronically linked to your passport number. You travel with your physical passport and your printed eVisa. Immigration officers at Egyptian airports scan both. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date.

Apply for the eVisa instead if your passport qualifies, since online processing is 3 to 8 business days. If you are not eligible for the eVisa, contact the embassy directly and request expedited processing for documented travel emergencies. Some missions have emergency slots, but they are not guaranteed.

Yes. The eVisa is recognized at all major international airports (Cairo, Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, Luxor, Marsa Alam, Alexandria) and at land borders with eligible categories. The regular sticker visa is also valid at all entry points. Neither restricts your entry airport.

Denials on the eVisa side are rare (under 2% in our processing history), and we screen for the common rejection causes before submission. If a denial does happen, the government fee is non-refundable, but our service fee is refunded for the cases we missed. You can still apply at the embassy if your case warrants a manual review.

Skip the embassy if you can

76 nationalities qualify for the Egypt eVisa. Application takes 5 minutes, approval lands in 3 to 8 business days.
